Watertown International Airport at a Glance
Why Choose ART Instead of a Larger Airport?
ART is a practical choice for travelers who want to stay close to home. You can avoid the longer drive to Syracuse Hancock International Airport, airport parking fees, and extra travel time on Interstate 81.
- A shorter drive from Watertown and Fort Drum
- Free airport parking
- Convenient American Airlines service to Philadelphia
- Less walking between parking, check-in, TSA, and the gate
- A simpler regional airport experience
- Easier access for families, military travelers, and business passengers
- Less time spent on major airport roads and parking shuttles
For some travelers, ART is the most convenient airport. For others, Syracuse may offer more airline choices and destinations. Compare your schedule, route, luggage needs, and total travel time before booking.
If you need transportation between the two airports, see our Watertown to Syracuse Airport transportation service.
Airlines and Flights at ART
American Airlines to Philadelphia, with connections worldwide.
American Airlines
Watertown International Airport is served exclusively by American Airlines, with regional service commonly operated by Piedmont Airlines on behalf of American Airlines.
Nonstop to Philadelphia (PHL)
ART has approximately two daily nonstop flights each way to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). The flight takes about an hour and a half, depending on conditions and routing.
Connections from PHL
Philadelphia is a major American Airlines hub. From PHL, passengers can connect to destinations throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe, and other international markets.
This makes the American Airlines Watertown–Philadelphia route useful for both local trips and longer journeys. Instead of driving several hours to a larger airport, many Northern New York travelers can begin their trip at ART and connect through Philadelphia.
Flight schedules can change by season. Confirm the current departure time directly with American Airlines before traveling.
How Early Should You Arrive at ART?
Watertown International Airport recommends arriving approximately two hours before your scheduled departure.
That extra time allows you to:
- Check in with American Airlines
- Check luggage
- Complete TSA screening
- Walk to the gate
- Handle weather or traffic delays
- Address unexpected travel changes
ART is smaller and often faster to navigate than a large airport. However, arriving early is still the safest choice, especially for morning flights, holiday travel, winter weather, checked bags, or passengers who need additional assistance.
Terminal and TSA operating hours can vary with the flight schedule. Check the official ART website and your American Airlines reservation for the latest passenger-processing information before leaving home.
2026 Airport Construction and Improvements
Watertown International Airport remains operational while its revitalization project continues. The approximately $10 million airport improvement project includes major upgrades to the terminal, parking, and runway facilities.
New Parking Lot Open
As of August 2026, the airport’s new parking lot is complete and open for travelers. On-site parking remains free, making ART a convenient option for passengers who choose to drive themselves.
Runway 10-28 Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation of Runway 10-28, including the runway expansion work, is nearing completion. Aircraft are expected to resume use of the expanded runway as early as August 15, 2026, subject to final project and operational conditions.
New Terminal in Operation
The new passenger terminal is already in operation. Improvements are designed to provide a more comfortable and efficient experience for passengers using ART.
Future Restaurant
Plans call for the former terminal building to be converted into a restaurant. The restaurant is anticipated to open in early 2027.
Airport operations continue throughout the construction and improvement work. Check current airport and airline updates if your travel date is near a project milestone.
ART Airport Travel Tips
Use these simple steps for a smoother trip:
Confirm your American Airlines flight time before leaving.
Check the live flight status for delays, cancellations, or diversions.
Arrive approximately two hours before departure.
Allow extra time during snow, fog, rain, and holiday periods.
Keep your identification and travel documents accessible.
Confirm your pickup location with your driver.
Reserve airport transportation in advance when possible.
Contact your airline if you need special assistance or baggage information.
Weather-Related Diversions
Poor weather can affect flights at ART. Rain, fog, snow, or low visibility may cause a flight to divert to Syracuse Hancock International Airport.
If this happens, American Airlines may arrange ground transportation, such as a bus ride, back to the Watertown area. Monitor your flight status and follow airline instructions. If you need local transportation after a diversion, contact 1000 Island Taxi at 315-615-9569 for availability.
